Str8 Aligners: keeping orthodontic treatment on track between visits
01

The challenge

Clear aligners only work if they are worn 20 to 22 hours a day and changed on schedule, every 7 to 14 days as the doctor decides. Patients do this on their own for months, with nothing to remind them how long the aligners have been out or when the next set is due.

Between appointments, doctors have little visibility of whether treatment is going to plan, and patients have no easy way to ask a question or check their records.

02

What we built

We built the Str8 Aligners app for iOS and Android with separate sign-ins for patients and doctors. A patient follows a wear timer that shows time in and out of the mouth, which aligner set to change to, and how many days remain until the finished smile.

The same app holds the patient's treatment records and messages, lets a patient start a new treatment, and keeps a direct line to the treating doctor.

03

The outcome

Patients can see at a glance whether they are on schedule, and doctors keep a connection to each patient between visits, so treatment is easier to stay on track.

How it helps, area by area.

01 Who it is for

One app for the patient and the doctor.

The problem

Aligner treatment involves two people who rarely see each other, and each needs a different view of the same treatment.

From the first screen, users choose whether to log in as a doctor or as a patient, so each sees the tools that matter to them.

  • Patients wearing clear aligners, including busy adults and teens
  • Orthodontists and dentists treating them
  • Separate "Login as Doctor" and "Login as User" entry points
  • Available on iOS and Android
02 Wear-time timer

Making 20 to 22 hours a day easy to follow.

The problem

Aligners only work when they are worn for most of the day, and it is easy to lose track of how long they have been out.

The timer shows at a glance whether the aligners are in or out, how long each has lasted today, which set to change to and how many days are left until the treatment ends.

  • Large wear timer showing time wearing and time out
  • Prompt for which aligner set to change to
  • Countdown of days to a finished smile
  • Matches the doctor's schedule of changing aligners every 7 to 14 days
03 Tracking & progress

Everything about the treatment in one place.

The problem

Treatment details are scattered across appointment notes, messages and memory.

A home screen puts tracking, profile and messages one tap away, and tabs for the timer, calendar, camera and statistics keep the daily routine together.

  • Home screen with Tracking, Profile and Messages tiles
  • Timer, calendar, camera and statistics tabs
  • Records section for the patient's treatment information
  • FAQ section for common questions about wearing and caring for aligners
04 Talking to the doctor

A direct line between visits.

The problem

Questions come up between appointments, and patients often wait for the next visit or search the internet instead.

Patients can message their treating doctor from the app and see replies in an inbox, and doctors have their own login to follow up.

  • Messages inbox in the app
  • Patient-to-doctor communication without a phone call
  • Option to start a new treatment from the app
  • Doctor sign-in for follow-up
05 Account & privacy

Simple account tools, in the patient's control.

The problem

Health apps need to respect personal data, and users expect to be able to leave.

Users manage their personal information from a profile screen and can log out or delete their account from the menu.

  • Profile with personal information
  • Log out and delete account options in the app menu
  • Separate patient and doctor access
